Hello!

Boardgames To Go was one of first boardgame podcasts, starting in March 2005. It's still going strong, now relocated to Boardgamegeek. Meanwhile the old posts are archived here. The audio files of the podcast were unchanged by this, and you shouldn't even notice the change on your MP3 player.

If you're here for the March 2005-June 2012 archives, have fun with the archeology. :-)

Otherwise, please follow me over to the new blog and associated guild, which should make it easier than ever to subscribe to the podcast, spark a discussion with other listeners, and keep the communication going with me. I've got the best listeners of all, and I appreciate your feedback.

BGTG 98 - Essen Anticipation 2009

As before, I've managed to squeeze in a show just before the Essen game fair Spiel that shares my anticipation for the event and a number of games. Nope, I'm not going there, just living vicariously through the preview information about the games about to debut at this enormous event in our hobby. All of this may will change after we start hearing (and seeing!) more about this games from firsthand gamer experience, first at Essen itself, and especially after a month or so at BGG.con. (Unfortunately, I won't be there, either.)

If you want to follow along to the titles I run down that I find interesting, you could look through this private geeklist. It's not a polished thing ready for others to comment on. In fact, I disabled the comments, preferring instead to include a link back to this blog entry. Please write your comments here, or else send email/audio feedback to the usual destinations. Thanks.

-Mark

Try it again now. I thought private lists could be viewed by other people if they somehow knew the url. Guess not. I've just made it public, just not posted to the BGG front page.

Nice show. Unlike Street Soccer that had passing & shooting, it looks like BasketBoss involves drafting players (set collection mechanic) to create a team rather than basketball gameplay.

Thanks for the show and interesting thoughts Mark! I know you've talked about this some before, but I after this show I wanted to hear more about games that have lived up to their hype and that you still make time to play.

PS - I think Macau was a Portuguese trade colony in the far east and not a Puerto Rican one. ;)

I said that?! Must be because we played Puerto Rico last week. :-)

What happened to 97?

The truth is, I made a mistake when I recorded the intro and didn't take the time to redo it! However, since I already had another recording "in the can" (the All About Brass episode with Stephanie Kelleher), I decided that one will be #97 and I'll post it soon.

Mark, good show. I know you were trying out a new recording device, and I recommend you go back to your old way. You could definitely tell the difference.

Next year you should have someone else on that has thoughts about Essen releases. Not me, because I don't really look into such things, but certainly you know a few people that care about such things. It would mean some planning however.... :)

Too bad this recorder didn't sound as good. It's a little portable doohickey that is awfully portable and convenient. But I also thought it wasn't as clean (or full-sounding) as my regular recording rig.

The next podcast, the "lost" episode #97, will use the good ol' Logitech headphones and splitter that I've used so much.

Good idea about including someone else for next year's Essen show. That planning will be tricky, though... :-)

I have to be honest, I don't listen to your show because the sound quality is great (Although the logitech headset is really good)

I listen to your show because you are a straight talker, with substance in your show, not jingles, not fluff, not filler, not news. Straight up talk about games and gaming.

You could record your show talking through your shoes, and I would still listen, so do whatever you need to do to stay interested and happy.

Aber bitte mit Sahne! With whipped cream, please!
This phrase was made popular back in the '70s by German pop singer Udo J├╝rgens.
All the non-German podcasters have trouble with the pronunciation (a lesson for German publishers to learn...).
If you are interested in how to say it watch this:

Good idea about past Essen favorites, Chris. That will be in the next podcast (did the notes last night.)
